This course aims to put development economics into practice by focusing on the development of a single village, Palanpur (India), over 70 years. The long-term perspective sets the analysis of development processes in the context of the entire country's story, including its integration in the world economy, technological changes, and political and social evolutions. The course will attempt to analyze the drivers of changes, why some people do better or worse than others, and what influences mobility and inequality over time. The course will be based on the book of Lanjouw, Stern et al. (2018), with required reading of chapters ahead of class. Using the data from the Palanpur village over 70 years, students will learn how to document key indicators of development and their evolution through time.
