Introduction

  • This course is a theoretical training module (approximately 3 hours) designed to introduce PhD students to the principles of Open Science and to good practices in research data management (RDM). It provides the conceptual, scientific, legal, and ethical foundations needed to understand how research data should be managed in compliance with institutional and funder requirements, particularly in the context of European research projects.

The course precedes a practical workshop dedicated to the writing of a Data Management Plan (DMP). It is intended to prepare participants for this workshop by giving them a shared vocabulary, a common framework, and a clear understanding of key concepts such as FAIR principles, open access, data sharing, documentation, repositories, licences, and researcher visibility.

Participants are free to follow this course at their own pace, according to their individual constraints. However, access to the practical DMP writing workshop is conditional on the successful completion of a self-assessment quiz (MCQ) covering the content of this theoretical module. This quiz ensures that all participants have acquired the essential knowledge required to engage effectively in the hands-on session.

By the end of the overall training pathway, participants will be able to identify and describe their research data, apply appropriate data management practices throughout the research lifecycle, and actively contribute to Open Science. The final validation of the full training programme is based on the delivery of an individual Data Management Plan, tailored to each researcher’s project and research context.
